Tahaa shares the same lagoon and is only 3.2 kms as the crow flies, from the north of Uturoa. Its 4,470 inhabitants (1996 census) lead a quiet life of fishing and farming. They sell their products at the markets of Uturoa and Papeete. Tahaa is also called the "vanilla island" due to its numerous vanilla plantations. The strong and rich aroma of the Polynesian vanilla perfumes the 67 kms of the road to the coast, threading its way through small villages up to the hills and offering a panoramic view over the deep bays of the island. Several islets called "motu" situated within the coral reef present pleasant picnic places with their beaches of white sand. Coral gardens invite you to a skin diving visit. Tahaa has just woken up to tourism and still keeps the true flavour of Polynesia
